Guides to finding and using the collection

Database

The Archives has an online database to allow users to find information about record creators, record series and individual items. You can get help with using the database.

The database includes information about:

  • all deposits in the Noel Butlin Archives Centre
  • all series in the University Archives
  • all the organisations and people who created them ('authority records')

Item lists

60% of item lists are on the database as at Octo July 2016. Other item lists can be consulted in the Archives reading room or emailed to researchers. They can also be scanned and emailed or photocopied and posted on request.

Subject guides

Subject guides introduce researchers to records on various topics that can be researched at the Noel Butlin Archives Centre or the University Archives. They cover some of the more popular research queries.  

Reference library

A range of published materials relating to the broad themes of the records held by the Noel Butlin Archives Centre. Most items are included in the ANU Library catalogue

Guide to Australian archival sources for labour history

The Guide to Australian archival sources for labour history is intended to provide the researcher with an introduction to archival sources relating to the labour movement in Australia. 

ABLative

A former Noel Butlin Archives Centre newsletter, describing acquisitions and collections. Hardcopy editions ceased in 1997, although copies of back issues can be obtained from the Centre. Feature articles from past editions have been republished.

Australian Trade Union Archives Website

Australian Trade Union Archives (ATUA) is an online gateway for researchers and scholars of labour history, designed to link together historical detail, archival resources, published material and current information about Australian industrial organisations, mainly including trade unions and also employer bodies.This website is based on Parties to the Award, a book which traces the history of federally registered trade unions and provides guidance on the location of their records.

General index

The general card index is arranged alphabetically by subject, personal or organisation name, event, etc. It provides direct references to records on specific subjects. The index is neither exhaustive nor comprehensive. It should be used as a starting point, leading to consultation of the relevant deposit lists.

Indexes to organisational rulebooks, articles of association and company annual reports

Two card indexes to trade union rulebooks, company and other organisations' articles of association, and the annual reports of various Australian companies.

Pastoral station index

A card index to information relating to named pastoral holdings is available in the reading room.

Serials index

A card index, which refers to serial publications held by the Centre. It includes up-to-date copies of newsletters, circulars and other publications routinely received from depositors.

Map catalogue

A searchable guide to maps in the Noel Butlin Archives Centre Collection.

Catalogue of printed material

A card index to printed material in fully processed collections. Items are catalogued by author, title and subject.
