Building Highlight - ANU Exchange - Kinloch Lodge, Davey Lodge, Warrumbul Lodge and Lena Karmel Lodge

ANU Exchange was a joint development between the ANU and the ACT Government to develop the West Civic area between the Acton Campus and Civic. A key component of the project was the development of four new student residences, developed and managed by UniLodge.

Kinloch Lodge was named in honour of Dr Hector Kinloch, who had a long career at the ANU as a Senior Lecturer and then Reader in History in the School of General Studies (1966-88). His dedication to student welfare saw him serve as Deputy Warden of Burton Hall (1967–68), Dean of Students (1981–84), and Acting Warden and Honorary Senior Fellow at Fenner Hall (1989–93). He was also co-founder of the National Association of Gambling Studies and served in the ACT Legislative Assembly. Kinloch Lodge stands on the site of the former Childers Street Hall.

Davey Lodge was named in honour of Lieutenant Matthew Davey, an undergraduate doctor who was tragically killed in a Royal Australian Navy Sea King helicopter crash in Indonesia in April 2005 at the age of just 31. Davey had been awarded the University Medal and Tillyard Prize at the ANU. He was an Intensive Care Registrar at The Canberra Hospital and member of the RAN Reserve at the time of his death.

Warrumbul Lodge takes its name from the Ngunnawal word meaning ‘youth’. The Ngunnawal are the indigenous people of the Canberra region and its first inhabitants.

Lena Karmel Lodge is named after Lena Karmel, wife of former ANU Vice-Chancellor Peter Karmel. The building, which can house up to 550 students, was opened in 2012 as part of the Gillard Labor Government’s $4.3 billion investment to increase the supply of affordable housing across the nation through the National Rental Affordability Scheme. It offers students accommodation at 20% below the market average. Professor Peter Karmel was an economist and Vice-Chancellor of the ANU (1982-87). Peter and Lena strongly supported the ANU through their philanthropy, particularly through their support of the Schools of Art and Music and the Peter and Lena Karmel Anniversary Scholarship for outstanding graduating students each year in music and art.
