Vale Sigrid McCausland

1 December 2016

We are very sad to report the death on 30 November of Dr Sigrid McCausland, former Australian National University Archivist. Sigrid was a highly respected member of the international archival profession who was Secretary to the International Council on Archives Section for Archival Educators (ICA SAE).

Sigrid began her association with the ANU as an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts student and returned in 1998 to become University Archivist, a position she held until 2005. She was active in the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History serving as ACT Branch President from 2001 to 2003.

Sigrid was instrumental in the campaign to save the Noel Butlin Archives Centre from threatened closure in the late 1990s / early 2000s and improving facilities for Archives users by moving the reading room from the Acton Underhill to the Menzies Building. In 2003 Sigrid successfully nominated the most significant company collection in the Noel Butlin Archives Centre, the Australian Agricultural Company records, for inclusion in the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.

After leaving the ANU Sigrid shared her experience and knowledge as the Australian Society of Archivists’ Education Officer and as Senior Lecturer in the School of Information Studies at Charles Sturt University.

Sigrid will be greatly missed by friends, colleagues and others who experienced her dedication to archives and the archival profession.
